A traction passenger lift operates through a traction machine that drives a sheave. Steel wire ropes pass over the sheave, connecting the car and counterweight. The friction (traction) between the ropes and sheave enables smooth vertical movement. The counterweight balances 40–50% of the rated load, significantly reducing motor power demand and improving energy efficiency.
Two main configurations:
Geared traction system – Suitable for low to mid-rise buildings, cost-effective and reliable.
Gearless traction system – Designed for high-rise applications, offering higher speed, lower noise, and superior ride comfort.
